1. Most Owners Land On Allergies First, And Often Too Early
Constant scratching, paw licking, chewing, rubbing along the furniture. The first thought is nearly always allergies, and sometimes that is right.
But a lot of things look like allergies. Flea reactions, bacterial and yeast infections, mites, simple dry skin and hormonal imbalances all produce the same picture. Treating the wrong one is how an itch drags on for months.
2. Dogs Do Not Show Allergies The Way People Do
There is rarely any sneezing or watery eyes. In dogs it goes to the skin and the ears almost every time.
What you actually see is persistent scratching or biting, excessive paw licking, red or inflamed skin, recurring ear infections, patchy hair loss, hot spots and face rubbing. If it comes and goes with the seasons, environmental triggers are the more likely explanation.

Flea allergy dermatitis is the single most common allergic skin problem in dogs, and it does not take an infestation. In a sensitive dog, one bite is enough to set off days of itching, usually around the tail base, lower back and inner thighs.
Which is why year-round prevention matters even if you have never seen a flea, and why it is the first thing a vet will rule out before looking at anything else.
4. Some Of This Needs A Vet, And It Is Worth Saying So
If the skin is broken, weeping, infected or the ears are badly affected, that is a veterinary job and no supplement substitutes for it. The same goes for sudden severe itching or anything that comes with lethargy or weight change.
